PREPARATION PRIOR TO THE DAY
OF SERVICE.
1. Consult Program Committee about speaker, biographical information, theme, etc.
2. Review order of service.
3. Ask someone to be prepared to light the chalice and say a few words.
4. Select opening and closing words.
Find a relevant reading, responsive reading, prayer
meditation (unless the speaker provides his or her own.) Say a
few Words about UUS for the benefit of visitors. The hymnal has excellent
resources toward the back of the book.
1. Please arrive about 25 minutes before starting time.
2. Gather announcements and review prior to starting.
3. Place a glass of fresh cold water accessible to the speaker.
4. Greet the speaker. Review together the order of service. Demonstrate the microphone to speaker; be sure he or she can be heard, adjust microphone when talk begins.
5. Consult as necessary with music person
on timing, cues, etc.
DURING THE SERVICE.
1. Follow the agreed order of service, moderate the flow.
2. Keep announcements short as possible, ask for joys and concerns to be kept personal.
3. Moderate or assist with moderating the discussion period. Before the talk-back begins remind congregation to wait for the microphone before asking questions, so that we may have their words on tape.
4. Summarize, thank the speaker, closing words. – Relate subject to Affirmations.
5. Extinguish the chalice.
6. Announce coffee and refreshments downstairs
7. Attend to the comfort needs of speaker and speaker's guests. If necessary, provide monies to speaker from treasurer.
8. After the service collect and put away program covers and music. Pick up any trash in the rows of chairs.
