"CROWDIE" FROM NZ

The ROM files are not backed up by all the backup programs I have seen for Windows CE devices. So doing a restore will not affect the stability of your E-200.

The only system files that will be restored are .DLLs, etc that have been installed by your non-ROM applications. i.e. applications that you have manually installed yourself.

> Also, what about the 100 and 101 updates on the casio site? I
> put those on right when I got the unit. Do they go on before or
> after the ROM update? Do you need both, or does 101

The correct update procedure is:

1) Install the ROM update. E-200 will automatically reboot
2) Install the CASIO Pocket PC 2002 Update 1.00
3) IMMEDIATELY after installing reboot the Cassiopeia E-200
4) Install the CASIO Pocket PC 2002 Update 1.01
5) Reboot your Cassiopeia.

The main reason to reboot your Cassiopeia is to allow the registry to reload and memory resident system files to be replaced.

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your E-200s. We have a 0% failure rate here in New Zealand with the E-200's backlight. The difference between our stock and US stock appears to be the serial numbers:

US - 1APxxx-00xxxxx and 0APxxx-00xxxxx
NZ - 2APxxx-00xxxxx

CASIO Inc (US) received their stock of E-200s before everybody else and hence the difference in serial numbers.

If I was you I would get an E-200 from CASIO Inc with a serial number 2APxxx-00xxxxx.

The next E-200s will be available in late February or early March. You may want to return your E-200 and get a replacement from that stock.

The issue that is being discribed in detail across the US is not happening Down Under. I agree with you that it is not an OS problem - it is certainly a hardware issue.

My point is why is it happening in the US but not Down Under? The only difference (apart from serial numbers) I can see is that the US works on 110v where we work on 240v down here.

If the problem is a design fault over all the E-200s then why do we not experience it down here?

The Cassiopeia Pocket PC 2002 Updates have to be installed one at a time. The Cassiopeia Pocket PC 2002 Update Version 1.01 does not include the Cassiopeia Pocket PC 2002 Update Version 1.00.

It appears that on the E-200 the Storage Cards are accessed in this order:

Storage Card 1: In-built Storage
Storage Card 2: Compact Flash Card

This means that any application that can only access Storage Card 1 (Inbox, Notes) cannot access the Compact Flash or MMC/SD slots.

2-3-02
In the Inbox Options you will notice that the Storage card size is always 5725KB no matter what size CF card is in the E-200. This is because the Inbox is only looking at the "In-built Storage" area and not the CF or MMC/SD slot.

I believe this is the same issue that has been reported with the Notes application not closing or saving the Note when the "Save to" option is set to "Storage card 1 (if available)" in the Notes application.

In the registry the attachments folder location is defined at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Inbox
Attachments

There you will find three value names that define the location. By default these are:

TopDir "Program Files"
MiddleDir "Connections"
BottomDir "Mail Attachments"

Once you have synchronized for the first time or connected to your ISP for the first time a fourth value name is added:

AttsDir "Inbox.mstxxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxxx"

I am currently working on how to adjust the registry to move the mail attachments folder to the CF or MMC/SD card. This sounds nice and easy but as soon as you move the attachments and adjust the registry the Inbox reports that it is unable to locate the attachment when you try to open it.

Have a look at http://www.cemonster.com/pocketpc.html

You should be able to find a suitable backup program there.

I am assuming you are running an E-200. Have you:

1) Reflashed your ROM with the Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 Update Version 1.0 (4.6MB) - http://casio.monacocorp.co.nz/cassi...PPCEUU1_cab.zip

This fixes a number of general issues in the Pocket PC 2002 OS including PPP and SMTP issues. Copy the .CAB file into the E-200's memory and run it from there. WARNING: all data on the E-200 will be lost. Backup the E-200 first!!!!

2) Installed the CASIO Cassiopeia Pocket PC 2002 Update Version 1.01 (70.5K) - http://casio.monacocorp.co.nz/cassi...2002updt101.zip

This fixes an issue with the E-200 where after using the Inbox secondary storage cards will produce errors when being accessed.

There are now two types of updates:

Flash Updates

These updates pemanently update the Flash ROM that the Pocket PC 2002 OS is stored in. Once this update is applied it normally cannot be removed. When you factory reset the E-200 Flash Updates are not removed.

Memory Resident Updates

These updates are installed into an E-200 just like an application. They are installed into the E-200's storage memory and are lost if the unit is factory reset (or blanked).

Each E-200 has just over 5MB of flash area available for user applications and updates. This area is called the CASIO in-built storage area. If you install a memory resident update into the CASIO in-built storage area rather than the default directory (Microsoft ActiveSync asks this when you are installing the update) you will install the memory resident update into the non-volitile flash memory and you will not loose the memory resident update if the unit is E-200 is factory reset (or blanked).

CASIO has released the Pocket PC 2002 Update V1.01 for the Cassiopeia E-200.

"CASSIOPEIA Pocket PC 2002 Update File Version 1.01" fixes a problem that made it impossible to read from or write to built-in storage after use of a dial-up connection. Attempting to write to or read from built-in storage following use of a dial up connection causes an error, after which it is impossible to use built-in storage unless the CASSIOPEIA is reset.

This update is available from Recommended Cassiopeia Updates Page at http://www.cassiopeia.co.nz/software/softupgrade.htm

The Windows CE system databases (calendar, contacts, tasks, etc) MUST be stored in the /Databases folder of main memory. This means you cannot access these databases from secondary storage (CF, MMC, SD card).

There are third party programs that will copy the PIM (calendar, contacts, etc) into a backup file on the secondary storage card. What model of Cassiopeia are you running?

1-28-02

The information we have is that CASIO is working on something for E-200 owners who have .CMF video files. They have not been specific so the solution could be:

1) A .CMF player for the E-200
2) A .CMF -> Other Video Format converter for the Desktop PC

1-25-02

The Pocket PC 2002 Service Pack 1 is a Flash update to correct several communications issues Microsoft has found with the Pocket PC 2002 OS.

You can download all the Cassiopeia updates for all the Cassiopeia models (including the BE-300) from http://casio.monacocorp.co.nz/cassi...softupgrade.htm.

1-09-02

Unfortunately the Windows CE, Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002 operating systems do not support storing system databases (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, E-mail) in secondary memory.

1-08-02

The official word out of CASIO Japan is that the JK-710DC digital camera card is NOT compatible with the E-200 and there are no plans to write E-200 drivers for the JK-710DC.
